The Mighty Rho Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was born on August 31, 1977 at the Shrimp Hut Restaurant in Surfside, TX. The application for the graduate chapter charter was made to the Supreme Council of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. through the Ninth District Representative, Bro. Samuel W. Prince on June 10, 1977 in Freeport, TX. Bro. Prince and the South Texas State Representative, Bro. John Captain presented seven mighty Omega Men of various chapters with the charter for service to the Brazoria County Area. The Brothers of Rho Xi Chapter are known for their hard work and dedication to the Brazoria County and Houston communities. With a rich history of service, and a proud legacy of accomplished members, Rho Xi has contributed greatly to fraternal and community advancement. Over the years, many Brothers from Rho Xi Chapter have held leadership positions such as, Omega Life Membership Foundation Secretary, Omega Life Membership Foundation Region Nine Representative, Ninth District Representative, Ninth District First Vice District Representative, Ninth District Keeper of Records and Seal, Ninth District Chaplain, Ninth District Counselor, Ninth District Director of Public Relations, Ninth District Talent Hunt Chairman, Ninth District Marshal, Lone Star State Ques President, Lone Star State Ques Secretary, Southeast Texas State Representative and Southeast Texas Membership Selection Process Chairmen, just to name a few. In addition to the numerous leadership positions held over the years, countless awards have been conferred upon the members of Rho Xi Chapter, including the Shelly Steward Award, Omega Man of the Year and Citizen of the Year. The Ninth District Talent Hunt program was renamed in honor of Bro. James Doss (Omega Chapter), one of Rho Xi Chapter’s Charter Members. Since being chartered 40 years ago, Rho Xi Chapter has awarded more than $100,000 in academic scholarships. The chapter has also awarded scholarships exceeding $20,000 to local talent hunt winners. The Brothers of Rho Xi Chapter have held quarterly blood drives, walked the communities to register, educate and mobilize voters, participated in activities that uplifted the community and donated time and money to a host of other worthy causes. Rho Xi Chapter has been recognized six times as the Ninth District Graduate Chapter of the Year for its hard work, dedication and service on behalf of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Rho Xi Chapter, the Brothers held their Annual Picnic and School Supply Drive as well as a formal banquet celebration. Approximately 150 people gathered at Dunbar Park Pavilion in Lake Jackson, TX on August 19, 2017. Attendees donated a plethora of school supplies to disburse to schools in Brazoria County. A performance by the Rho Xi March Team, a DJ and plenty of other entertainment was provided for everyone in attendance. Volleyball, soccer and a bounce house was available for the children in attendance while the adults played games such as kickball, corn hole, horseshoes, bid whist, spades and dominoes. The Rho Xi Chapter 40th Anniversary Banquet was originally scheduled for Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Lake Jackson Civic Center in Lake Jackson, TX, but due to severe weather warnings and the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, the Brothers of Rho Xi Chapter were forced to postpone the event until Friday, November 3, 2017. The 40 year celebration was attended by one hundred thirty people. Bro. Joseph Washington served as the master of ceremonies, ensuring the program moved smoothly throughout the night. Bro. Jason Johnson, Basileus of Rho Xi Chapter, provided a heartfelt welcome to the Men of Omega and their guests. Bro. Alex Herman gave a tremendous introduction for Bro. Mark Hayes, the guest speaker of the evening. Bro. Hayes captivated the audience by speaking about faith, family and friendship with love and enthusiasm. After the food was served, a proclamation from the Grand Basileus, Bro. Antonio Knox, was presented to the Mighty Rho Xi Chapter for 40 years of service in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. A live band and an open dance floor entertained the 130 people that attended the 40 year celebration. Rho Xi Chapter continues to live its creed and be a shining light in the community for years to come. Long live the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Mighty Rho Xi Chapter.
